Jason Leopold, a reporter from Bloomberg, filed a request under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and revealed that since 2022, the Chairman of the SEC, Gary Gensler, has been subjected to “death threats” on multiple occasions. The documents show that some individuals have sent Gensler voicemails and emails containing rude and violent threats, with no explanation. One person said they would shoot and “chop him to death”, while another threatened that they would be sued if they continued to send these messages.
The FOIA documents indicate that one of the death threats may have come from a government employee, while another person who sent Gensler a threatening email with the subject “go die” resides in Australia. The U.S. Attorney’s Office has declined to bring criminal charges in the latter case.
Since 2021, Gensler has served as the SEC Chairman under President Joe Biden. Although his term is set to end in 2026, some experts have suggested that if the results of the U.S. presidential election favor Democratic candidate Kamala Harris or Trump, it may prompt the SEC Chairman to resign.
