ETH Daily announced that Ethereum core developers are planning to release the next upgrade for Ethereum, called Pectra, by the end of the first quarter of 2025. This upgrade will include the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) Object Format (EOF). The upgrade will utilize PeerDAS, a data availability sampling solution that leverages existing peer-to-peer components within Ethereum.
In addition, developers have agreed to replace the account abstraction EIP-3074 with the proposed update EIP-7702, as suggested by Vitalik. EIP-7702 allows an externally owned account (EOA) to act as a smart contract wallet during the transaction process. Pectra consists of the Prague upgrade for the execution layer and the Electra upgrade for the consensus layer. The final scope of the upgrade is still under discussion and may undergo some changes, such as the potential postponement of Verkle to the Osaka hard fork.
