In a recent article released by Vitalik Buterin, the founder of Ethereum, he emphasized the focus on enhancing the permissionless and decentralized features of the Ethereum network in the near and medium term. This includes concepts such as stateless nodes, MEV mitigation, and single-slot finality, taking Ethereum further in the direction of decentralization. Efforts will also continue to be made in areas such as light client technology and decentralized cross-L2 bridges to ensure that Ethereum L1 becomes a strong foundational layer for decentralization and security.
Vitalik Buterin stated that there are countless blockchain projects targeting the niche market of “we can be super fast, we will consider decentralization later.” He believes that Ethereum should not be one of these projects. Ethereum L1 can and should serve as a powerful base layer for layer 2 projects that adopt a massively scalable approach, using Ethereum as a pillar for decentralization and security. Even with a layer 2-centric approach, the first layer itself needs to have sufficient scalability to handle a large number of operations. However, we should deeply respect the unique features that make Ethereum stand out and continue to strive to maintain and improve these features as Ethereum expands.
