According to CoinDesk, former US President Donald Trump has promised at the Libertarian National Convention in Washington D.C. that if reelected, he would commute the sentence of Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht on his first day in office. Trump stated that Ulbricht has already served 11 years and “we want to get him home.” The audience at the event cheered enthusiastically, holding up signs that said “Free Ross.”
Ross Ulbricht was sentenced in 2015 to two life terms plus 40 years in prison for creating and operating the dark web marketplace Silk Road, effectively a life sentence with no possibility of parole.
Before his speech that day, Trump praised the cryptocurrency industry on Truth Social and emphasized the need for the US to maintain a leading position in the field. He criticized Biden’s desire to see the crypto industry “slowly die” and promised not to allow that to happen during his tenure. He also stated that he would never allow the creation of a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC).
